Myths of Installing Steel roof at your Home

July 29, 2010 by adamp Leave a Comment

Once you read these myths about metal roofing, you will wonder how come I did not think of these before! Let us break this one-by-one for you as follows:

Myth I – I can’t walk on a metal roof lest I damage it.

Truth – Metal roofs can be walked upon. This is not to say that one should not be careful and take all precautions while stepping out to take a walk on the roof but if jogging shoes are worn, it is perfectly okay. While it is raining, try not to walk on the metal roof as you may slip and fall. Stay clear of the roof when the surface is wet. You can even take advice from your contractor on techniques to walk on the metal roof installed.

Myth II – Metal roofs are noisy during the rains.

Truth – We are not talking about the cheap metal roofs over barns that sound like gunfire during the monsoons. These days, modern metal roofing is installed on plywood, solid sheathing or over your current roof. The noise thus created is even lesser than a de-rigueur asphalt shingle top. In fact, metal roofs are quieter than non-metal roofs. Metal roofs keep away the noise in rain and bad weather.

Myth III: Metal Roof is susceptible to rust.

Reality- Modern metal roofing is built to last for decades. Steel metal roofing has a metal coating protection layer made with zinc or aluminum, which is bonded to the steel and then painted with a high quality paint designed to withstand the toughest abuse from bad weather, and provide the desirable color and looks that homeowners want.

Truth – Metal roofing does not necessarily mean that your house is getting struck by lightening. On the contrary, if your house does get hit, then the metal roof helps dissipate the charge. Also, since metal is a non combustible material, the roof will not be in flames.

Myth IV- A metal roof is prone to dents.

Truth – It is the metal in the metal roofing that makes all the difference. Steel metal roofing has a protective layer of zinc and aluminum. This bonds with the steel and is then painted with good quality paint; paint that can withstand all bad weather.

Myth V – Metal roofing costs a lot of money.

Truth – Surprise! Metal roofs cost a lot lesser than the asphalt shingle roof. The metal roof also augments the value of your store and it will also help save money on cooling costs. Metal roofing helps in saving 50% energy costs during the summer. A metal roof may turn out to be the last roof you will ever have to offer.

Myth VI- Metal Roof is susceptible to cracks and damages.

Truth – Modern metal roofs are built to take care of calamities such as hurricane and cyclones. Hail does not dent a metal roof and neither do extremely high winds. Most metal roofing is extremely high. It is not an unusual sight to see metal roof with no damages next to another home which has its roof all damaged.
